Volkswagen starts battery cell production in Salzgitter

Volkswagen said it has opened a pilot line for small series battery production at Salzgitter in Lower Saxony, with a 16 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery cell factory planned to be built in 2020.

“We already develop and manufacture power electronics, battery systems, electric motors and charging systems, and research battery recycling," said Thomas Schmall, chairman of the group components board. He added that the company is now on its way to becoming the world's leading manufacturer of e-mobility components.

In total, 1,000 jobs will be created by 2023 or 2024 in the testing and production of battery cells at Salzgitter.

Volkswagen has invested 100 million Euros to gather its own development and production information and 900 million Euros in joint battery operations with Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt.

The 16 GWh battery cell factory is a joint venture with Northvolt.

Investing in battery cell production is seen as an important step towards securing the future of Germany's strong auto industry. Currently, German automakers rely on Asian suppliers to supply battery components for first-generation e-car models.

Economy minister Peter Altmaier has repeatedly called for the development of battery cell production capacities across Europe, but many automakers are far from entering the market due to high initial investment costs and Asian manufacturers with the advantage of long experience.
