Installation work is progressing on the new electric arc furnace (EAF) unit being built at Austrian steelmaker voestalpine’s Donawitz plant as part of its transition to lower-emission steel production. According to the company’s statement on August 27, the main components of the two electric arc furnaces that will form the core of the new production line have been installed at the site.

The new unit will feature two electric arc furnaces, EAF 1 and EAF 2. Installation of the furnaces’ lower and upper shells and lids, as well as rotary towers, lifting cylinders and electrode arms, has been completed. Installation of scrap transfer vehicles, which will transport scrap from the storage area to the furnace section, is also underway.
850,000 tonnes of lower-emission steel targeted in 2027
The transformation at Donawitz is part of voestalpine’s “greentec steel” programme. With the commissioning of the new electric arc furnace in 2027, the company plans to produce approximately 850,000 tonnes of CO₂-reduced steel annually at the site. The EAF is expected to operate primarily on scrap and green electricity.
voestalpine considers the electric arc furnaces planned for its Donawitz and Linz plants an important step in the transformation of steel production in Europe. According to the company’s annual report, the EAFs at both sites are scheduled to become operational in the first half of 2027.
