voestalpine and VERBUND are expanding the H2FUTURE hydrogen plant in Linz

The international steel and technology group voestalpine and Austria’s largest electricity provider VERBUND have announced their decision to expand H2FUTURE one of the world’s longest-operating PEM electrolysis plants located in the city of Linz.

voestalpine and VERBUND are expanding the H2FUTURE hydrogen plant in Linz

Commissioned in 2019, the facility was the world’s largest hydrogen pilot project at the time. The expansion will not only boost green hydrogen production but will also include infrastructure for compression, purification, storage, and loading.

New Facilities to Be Built as Part of Expansion

The expansion project, with a total budget of €16.4 million, will add a compression and purification unit and five hydrogen storage tanks to the existing electrolysis system. This upgraded infrastructure will enable the production, storage, and transportation of green hydrogen at higher purity levels and improved efficiency.

H2FUTURE Follow-up Project to Run Through 2029

The research project, known as H2FUTURE Follow-up, is aimed at systematically continuing hydrogen production while optimizing key quality parameters such as purity and pressure. The hydrogen produced at the expanded facility will be stored in newly built tanks and prepared for transportation and various applications.

Following more than two years of preparatory work, installation of the new systems is currently underway. Functional testing is scheduled to begin in January 2026, with initial research results expected by the end of that year. The project is set for completion in December 2029.

Green Hydrogen to Be Used in voestalpine’s Broader R&D Initiatives

voestalpine plans to utilize the green hydrogen generated not only at its Linz site but also across other research and development projects within the Group. The initiative marks another important step toward sustainable steel production.
