According to data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the capacity utilization rate stood at 81.0% during the week. In the corresponding week of the previous year, crude steel production totaled 1.770 million net tons, while the capacity utilization rate was recorded at 78.2%.
On a weekly basis, the increase in production remained limited. Crude steel output, which totaled 1.858 million net tons in the week ended July 25, 2026, rose by 0.6% to 1.870 million net tons in the week ended August 1. During the same period, the capacity utilization rate increased from 80.5% to 81.0%.
As of August 1, 2026, adjusted year-to-date US crude steel production reached 55.510 million net tons. This represented a 5.8% increase compared to 52.484 million net tons produced during the same period last year. The year-to-date capacity utilization rate stood at 79.0%, compared to 77.0% in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Regionally, crude steel production for the week totaled 125,000 net tons in the Northeast, 496,000 net tons in the Great Lakes region, 320,000 net tons in the Midwest, 860,000 net tons in the South, and 69,000 net tons in the West, bringing total weekly production to 1.870 million net tons.
