The US Trade Representative (USTR) announced new tariffs on imports from China under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. Accordingly, in order to protect US national security, as of September 27, 2024, a 25% tariff will be imposed on Chinese imports of ferronickel, steel and critical minerals such as cobalt, chromium, manganese and tungsten.
Previous tariffs ranged from 0% to 7.5%. This regulation was taken as a measure against China's trade practices as a result of the investigations launched in 2022 and aims to prevent unfair competition, especially in the steel and aluminum sectors.
The new tariffs cover key industrial materials entering the US, particularly those used in steel production and technology manufacturing. US imports of ferro-nickel and ferro-chrome from China have declined over the past three years, and China has been at the bottom of the US import list in these areas.
