US Nucor Steel to Work with SMS for Renewal

US-based Nucor-Yamato Steel has selected German plant manufacturer SMS to upgrade its No 2 rolling mill to produce high-strength steel.
Nucor-Yamato's Arkansas-based operation has a rolling capacity of 2.4 million metric tonnes. SMS is upgrading rolling mill 2, which produces wide flanges and H-pile sections, to expand its range of high-strength structural steels.
High-strength sections are common in high columns and roofing applications for arenas, stadiums and convention centres.
SMS has modernised rolling mill 1, which will provide mechanical equipment and factory control automation. Commissioning of the new tandem reversing plant is scheduled for the second half of 2020.
"The modernisation will allow Nucor-Yamato to expand our production capacity and include new high-strength grades of steel," said Thad Solomon, general manager of Nucor-Yamato Steel.
Nucor-Yamato also produces H-stiffening, sheet stacking, standard I-beams, channels and other structural steels.
