The US Department of Commerce announced its preliminary determination to impose a 29.51% countervailing duty on imports of rebar from Egypt. In a statement issued by the Department’s Enforcement and Compliance Office, the decision was based on preliminary findings indicating that Egyptian producers and exporters benefited from government subsidies.
The investigation covered the period from January 1 to December 31, 2024, and the countervailing duty has been provisionally applied under the preliminary determination as of January 13, 2026. US authorities stated that the countervailing duty investigation will be coordinated with the parallel anti dumping investigation, with a final determination expected no later than May 26, 2026.
Previously, in June 2025, the US initiated both countervailing duty and anti-dumping investigations into imports of rebar from Egypt, Algeria, Bulgaria, and Vietnam. Industry representatives in Egypt note that the decision could increase cost pressures for producers exporting to the US market. The final ruling is expected to have a significant impact on competitiveness and pricing strategies of Egyptian steel producers in the US market.
