UN Concerned About Additional U.S. Tariffs

The United Nations (UN) has expressed concern about the impact of additional U.S. tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico on the global economy.

UN Concerned About Additional U.S. Tariffs

In a statement on the matter, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, "We are clearly concerned that the growing trade restrictions could have negative effects on the global economy, especially in developing countries and regions with vulnerable populations." Dujarric emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules set by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to maintain stability in international trade, given the low growth in the global economy.

The U.S. administration had announced additional tariffs of 25% on goods imported from Canada and Mexico and 10% on imports from China. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on U.S. imports worth 155 billion Canadian dollars. Trudeau stated that these tariffs would take effect on Tuesday for goods worth 30 billion Canadian dollars, and within 21 days for the remaining 125 billion Canadian dollars worth of goods.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on social media that he had suspended the 25% additional tariff on Mexico for one month, in exchange for the country's commitment to strengthen border security.
