Wales Secretary Jo Stevens visited Tata Steel’s world-class galvanising plant in Newport, Llanwern this week, underscoring the government’s continued commitment to the UK steel industry. During the visit, Stevens met with union representatives and highlighted that steel remains a “strategic priority” ahead of the government’s forthcoming national steel strategy.
“We are determined to secure the future of UK steel production, with Welsh steel at the heart of that future,” Stevens said.
Tata Steel Llanwern Works Manager Craig Phillips stressed the importance of government policy in ensuring the sector’s long-term viability:
“Trade defence measures and energy costs are central to the sustainability of our industry. The Secretary’s visit sends a strong message that steel is still viewed as a strategic sector in the United Kingdom.”
Llanwern Multi-Union Committee Chair Reg Gutteridge praised the ongoing support of local MP Jess Morden, noting her frequent visits and advocacy in Parliament. He added:
“This visit highlighted, once again, how critical steel is to the national economy. It was also a vital opportunity to emphasise the need for urgent action on UK–EU quotas and tariffs to safeguard our industry and jobs.”
Gutteridge welcomed the government’s establishment of a green steel fund and a new steel strategy, adding:
“Our task now is to ensure these initiatives truly meet the needs of the sector and its workforce.”
Phillips concluded by emphasising the strategic importance of the Llanwern site:
“Visitors immediately see the advanced technology we operate here and understand how significant Llanwern is—not only for local communities, but also as a key supplier to major customers across the UK. This site plays an essential role in the country’s manufacturing base.”
