UK government updates steel purchasing regulation to boost local sales

The UK government has announced that it has updated the rules under the Public Procurement Notice (PPN) to report the origin of steel used in government projects that will strengthen the traceability of steel resources.

The update is expected to increase purchases of more British-made steel being smelted and poured in the country, which will force British buyers to refrain from purchasing sanctioned materials.

Gareth Stace, CEO of the British Steel Trade Association, said: "Until now, government infrastructure was able to use Russian steel and nobody knew about it. The UK will buy £640m worth of steel in 2020-2021 using only £268m worth of locally produced steel. This shows great potential to improve domestic consumption if the revised PPN is adhered to. Also, the purchase of English steel will increase the number of jobs in the UK."
