UK Government takes action to keep British Steel in production

Government officials have accelerated their efforts to create a stable raw material line to ensure uninterrupted production. Meanwhile, another ship carrying coke is on its way from Australia. The government announced that it was covering the cost of these critical materials using the existing Department for Business and Trade (DBT) budget.

New legislation that came into force at the end of the week empowered the government to intervene in the company's board of directors, guarantee workers' salaries and place direct orders for continued production. If necessary, these steps can also be taken directly by the government.

Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the moves are aimed at protecting 37,000 jobs and supporting the growth of the steel industry as part of the “Plan for Change”. Reynolds also announced the appointment of Allan Bell as interim  Chief Executive Officer and Lisa Coulson as interim Chief Commercial Officer.

Reynolds added: “We are always looking after the interests of our employees and the UK industry. We quickly secured the raw materials needed to save British Steel, which is vital for our country's infrastructure projects. We need it to deliver 1.5 million new homes, schools, hospitals and railways.”
