Typhoon Gaemi affected Taiwan's steel industry

Typhoon Gaemi recently hit Taiwan, significantly affecting various sectors, particularly agriculture in the central and southern regions. As rescue efforts intensified in the aftermath of the typhoon, there was a surge in demand for agricultural pipes. The typhoon also caused damage to construction and building support structures, leading to an increase in demand for steel pipe scaffolding.

In the face of these developments, steel pipe prices stabilized after falling for a while. However, the traditional off-season may put downward pressure on Taiwan's steel pipe market.

The typhoon also disrupted export activities. China Steel Corporation (CSC) and Dragon Steel Corporation (DSC) fell 62,000 tons short of their July shipment targets to 873,000 tons in total. Of this, CSC shipped 621,000 tons, while DSC contributed 252,000 tons. Domestic sales amounted to 511,000 tons and exports to 362,000 tons.

CSC noted that the typhoon that occurred between July 24-26 and the following weekend significantly affected export shipments, reducing them by around 50,000 tons.
