The Turkish rebar market spent the first weeks of June in the shadow of weak demand and high production costs. After the Eid al-Adha holiday, returns to the market were limited and trading volume remained at low levels. Expectations of a post-holiday recovery failed to materialize and buying appetite remained weak.
Rebar prices, which rose as high as $550.6/ton FOB at the end of May, failed to maintain these levels in the first days of June. With the decline in domestic and foreign demand, prices started a slight downward trend. However, there was no sharp decrease due to limited supply and high production costs.
Export inactivity continues
The picture is not clear on the export side either. Buyers in the European market are staying away from purchases as they have largely completed their positions before the July quota. In the Middle East, ongoing political and logistical problems in regions such as Yemen and Palestine continue to limit demand.
However, regular shipments to Syria and stable order volumes in Northern Cyprus provided partial support for producers.
Domestic market is inactive: Purchases remain cautious
Although the domestic market is expected to pick up after Eid al-Adha, there is no sign of a strong recovery yet. Buyers remain cautious due to high interest rates, difficulties in accessing financing and general economic uncertainty.
Prices in the domestic market are generally in the range of $540-565/ton, with regional variations. In the Izmir region, prices are as low as $545/ton, while ex-mill prices in the Marmara region are around $565/ton. While the official price of İçdaş remained unchanged at $560/ton, purchases in the market were mostly made at $550/ton.
Global developments are monitored
Following the US tariff hikes against China, Chinese producers are turning to alternative markets, increasing global competition. While this creates additional pressure for Turkish producers, the upcoming US interest rate decision in mid-June also leads to cautious expectations in the markets.
Overall, the Turkish rebar market is expected to continue to witness low trading volumes and volatile price movements in the second week of June.
