According to information compiled by SteelRadar from the data of the Steel Exporters’ Association, Türkiye’s steel consumption increased by 62% between 2010 and 2024, while during the same period production increased by 27%, exports by 2.3%, and imports by 79%.
Strong growth in domestic steel consumption
During the 2010–2024 period, Türkiye’s domestic steel consumption increased by approximately 62%, increasing from 23.6 million tons in 2010 to 38.3 million tons in 2024. The most pronounced as yearly increase in domestic steel consumption was recorded in the 2020–2021 period. Consumption climbed from 36.7 million tons in 2020 to 41.4 million tons in 2021, marking an increase of around 13%.In contrast, the sharpest decline in consumption occurred in the 2021–2022 period, when domestic steel consumption decreased from 41.4 million tons to 32.5 million tons, representing a decrease of approximately 21%.
Production of raw steel followed a fluctuating trend
Over the same period, crude steel production increased by approximately 27%, increasing from 29.1 million tons in 2010 to 36.9 million tons in 2024. The strongest growth was recorded in the 2020–2021 period, when production rose from 35.8 million tons in 2020 to 40.4 million tons in 2021, representing an increase of around 13%.The most notable decline in production occurred in the 2021–2022 period, with output decreasing from 40.4 million tons to 35.1 million tons, a decrease of approximately 13%.
Limited growth in exports
On the export side, steel exports amounted to 17.3 million tons in 2010 and stood at 17.7 million tons in 2024, indicating only a limited increase over the period as a whole. Steel exports recorded their strongest as yearly growth in the 2020–2021 period. Exports increased from 20.3 million tons in 2020 to 23.9 million tons in 2021, marking an increase of approximately 18%.By contrast, the sharpest decline in exports occurred in the 2022–2023 period, when shipments decreased from 19.6 million tons to 14.5 million tons, representing a decrease of around 26%.
Imports increased over the long term
Imports increased from 11.8 million tons in 2010 to 21.1 million tons in 2024, marking an increase of approximately 79%. The most notable increase in imports was observed in the 2022–2023 period. Imports increased from 18.1 million tons in 2022 to 20.3 million tons in 2023, representing a growth of around 12%. The volatile pattern in imports became particularly pronounced during the 2014–2015 period.
