Production at Manhize plant could reach 2 million tonnes
China-based Tsingshan Holding Group is considering significantly increasing production at its Manhize Steel Plant in Zimbabwe. The facility, located approximately 205 kilometres southeast of the capital Harare, currently produces 600,000 tonnes of steel annually. The company plans to increase the plant’s capacity to up to 2 million tonnes.
Benson Xu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tsingshan’s Zimbabwe operations, stated that the company is primarily focusing on diversifying its steel product range, followed by plans to increase production volumes.
Majority of production is exported
Approximately 40% of the steel produced at the Manhize plant is sold in the Zimbabwean domestic market, while the remainder is exported. Most exports are directed to South Africa, while Malawi and Zambia are also among the plant’s export markets.
