In a statement shared via his Truth Social account, Trump stated that the U.S. welcomes foreign investment and encourages companies to build their workforce through legal means. Addressing foreign firms, the president stated, “What we want is for you to hire and train American workers.”
ICE units conducted an operation on September 5 at the Hyundai-LG electric vehicle battery plant in Georgia. Over 300 of the approximately 450 staff members were detained, most of whom were South Korean nationals.
The South Korean government responded to the raid through Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lee Jae-woong, expressing concern and disappointment. The spokesperson emphasized, “The economic rights of our companies operating in the U.S. and the interests of our citizens must be protected.”
The South Korean Presidential Office announced that negotiations regarding the release of the detainees had concluded and that the employees would be transported back to South Korea via a chartered flight following administrative procedures.
