The EU has temporarily suspended additional tariffs on US-origin products

The European Commission announced that trade balancing measures applied to certain US-origin products have been temporarily suspended pursuant to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1727 of August 5, 2025. The decision was taken in line with the political agreement reached between the parties on July 27, 2025.

The EU has temporarily suspended additional tariffs on US-origin products

The suspension in question covers countermeasures introduced by Regulation (EU) 2025/1564, published on July 24, 2025, in response to measures imposed by the US on steel, aluminum, and certain automotive products.

In its statement, the Commission noted that, under this new political agreement, the United States has committed to immediately revise certain customs duties on imports originating in the Union and to limit these duties to a maximum of 15% ad valorem.

In light of these developments, the European Commission decided to immediately suspend the countermeasures to ensure the effective implementation of the political agreement. Accordingly, it was emphasized that no notification regarding these measures is currently required to the World Trade Organization Goods Council.

While it was noted that the suspension decision would remain in effect for six months, it was stated that the Commission would closely monitor developments in trade relations during this period and could take additional measures if necessary.

Finally, the Commission emphasized that this decision did not alter the EU's position on whether the protective measures being implemented by the US are consistent with WTO rules.
