Steel production in Ukraine continues despite power outages

Despite attacks on energy infrastructure, major producers did not experience prolonged shutdowns.

Steel production in Ukraine continues despite power outages

Russian missile and drone strikes carried out on January 7–8 caused power outages in several industrial regions of Ukraine; however, the country’s leading steel producers, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhstal, managed to maintain operations. Energy disruptions in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions led to temporary interruptions at steel plants, but both producers brought the situation under control without equipment damage or prolonged shutdowns.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih denied media reports claiming a complete shutdown, stating that although some units were temporarily suspended, production was not fully halted and operations continued safely. The plant is among Ukraine’s largest producers of long steel products and billets.

Zaporizhstal, part of the Metinvest Group, also temporarily suspended certain operations due to power outages following the attacks. As of January 9, the plant has been gradually restarting production using internal power generation, while regional electricity supply is being restored step by step. Zaporizhstal remains Ukraine’s only integrated producer of hot-rolled and cold-rolled coil.
