Steel contractor company's profit falls

Billington's profit is falling after project hit and steel price increases. Steelwork contractor Billington went bankrupt last year after being involved in a project where a customer went bankrupt and margins were eroded by sudden steel price spikes.

Steel contractor company's profit falls

Despite revenue rising quarter-on-quarter to £83m, the steelworker saw pre-tax profits fall from £1.7m to £180,000 in 2020, hit hard by Covid.

To help combat price volatility and launch many deferred projects in the second half of the year, Billington has invested heavily in steel stockpiling before the end of last year to ensure margins are maintained on secured jobs.

This steel will be fully utilized for projects in the first quarter of this year, which will return historical inventory levels.

Billington CEO Mark Smith said: “Price increases in 2021 were 60%, on top of the 40% seen in 2020.

“We expected a more stable supply picture in 2022, with previous supply constraints lifted and Billington benefiting from its scale in the market and its trading relationships with its primary supply chain.

"The beginning of the conflict in Ukraine led to restrictions on some raw materials used in the steel production process of some steel products, resulting in further price increases."
