Another major milestone has been reached in the construction of SSAB’s new steel plant in Luleå, Sweden. Vattenfall Eldistribution announced that the concession required for two new power lines to be built between Hällmyran and the Svartön industrial area has been finalized.
Each of the two 170 kV lines will be approximately 11 kilometres long. The lines will be built parallel to previously permitted power lines between Hällmyran and Hertsöfältet. The two lines will be installed on the same structure using a design known as a “Christmas tree” configuration (julgransutförande).
To supply electricity to the new steel plant
The primary purpose of the new power lines is to connect SSAB’s new steel plant under construction in Svartön to the electricity grid. The infrastructure is expected to provide an important connection as the company transitions from its existing blast furnace-based production to modern, integrated electric steelmaking.
Cecilia Zetterström, Head of Customers and Connections at Vattenfall Eldistribution, said the new lines are important for strengthening the regional electricity grid in Luleå and supporting the transformation of industry.
Concession finalized on September 4
Vattenfall Eldistribution submitted its application for the concession on June 20, 2024. Following a decision by the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate (Energimarknadsinspektionen), the concession was finalized on September 4, 2026.
Construction of the lines is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the power lines expected to be ready for operation in early 2029.
Thomas Hörnfeldt, SSAB’s Executive Vice President for Sustainability, said the development represents an important step for the company’s new steel plant in Luleå, adding that the establishment of the electricity infrastructure brings Sweden closer to its goal of eliminating 10% of the country’s CO₂ emissions.
