SSAB has laid the foundation for its new steel plant in Luleå

The new facility is expected to reduce Sweden’s total carbon dioxide emissions by 7% while strengthening the company’s long-term competitiveness. SSAB described this investment as a historic milestone in the transition to fossil-free steel production.

The plant, with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons, will be equipped with two electric arc furnaces, advanced secondary metallurgy, an integrated hot-rolling mill, and a cold-rolling complex. Replacing the existing blast furnace-based production, the facility is planned to become operational by the end of 2029.

As part of the total 4.5 billion euros investment, the project also includes a cold-rolling mill, advanced galvanizing, and continuous annealing units.
