SSAB and SMS group announced collaboration

SSAB has signed an Early Service Agreement (ESA) with SMS group for the new cold rolling complex to be built in Luleå, Sweden. Under the agreement, SMS group will undertake the engineering, equipment supply and process automation of the new facility.

SSAB and SMS group announced collaboration

This step stands out as one of the most important investments in SSAB's transition to fossil-free steel production. The mini-factory project in Luleå, approved by SSAB's Board of Directors in April 2024, aims to deliver a more competitive production structure with lower fixed costs, higher efficiency and eliminated CO₂ costs. Once completed, the plant is expected to eliminate around 2.8 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, reducing Sweden's total emissions by 10%.

The plant offers an environmentally friendly production approach with DREVER furnaces heated entirely by electricity, while induction and electric radiant tubes ensure a minimal carbon footprint.

Carl Orrling, Vice President and CTO of SSAB, stated: “We are pleased to partner again with the SMS group for our new cold rolling complex in Luleå.” Olaf Stalfort, CSO of SMS Group Europe, added: “This project demonstrates our strong partnership with SSAB on sustainable steel production and technological innovation.”
