South Africa's scrap imports decreased significantly

South Africa's scrap imports experienced a remarkable decrease in the January-June period of 2024. The amount of scrap imported into the country during this period was 18,347 tons.

Compared to the same period in 2023, the amount of scrap imported decreased by 7,441 tons. While this figure was 25,788 tons last year, it decreased to 18,347 tons this year. This change indicates a decrease of approximately 28.8%.

Botswana, Lesotho and Zimbabwe stand out among the countries with the largest share in scrap imports. Botswana ranked first with 8,572 tons of imports in January-June 2024. Lesotho ranked second with 3,571 tons of imports. Zimbabwe was recorded to have a smaller share in this period, with a lower import volume.

When a long-term assessment is made, the difference between 2024 and 2018 is quite remarkable. In 2018, South Africa's scrap imports amounted to 43,367 tons, while in 2024, this figure decreased to 18,347 tons. This means a 62.1% reduction.
