The six companies signed a service agreement for the project after being selected under JOGMEC’s public call for proposals launched in fiscal 2026. The work covers the design of facilities for CO₂ separation, capture, liquefaction, temporary storage and transportation by ship.
In the initial phase, the project is expected to transport approximately 3.43 million tonnes of liquefied CO₂ annually. This would be the largest shipping volume among the CCS clusters currently under development in Japan.
Mizushima to serve as the project hub
The project will focus on the Mizushima Industrial Complex in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Taking advantage of the location of industrial facilities in Mizushima, the consortium will conduct design and feasibility studies for a CCS value chain that allows CO₂ liquefaction, temporary storage and shipping facilities to be shared.
By sharing these facilities, the project aims to reduce infrastructure costs and develop a model in which CCS is implemented across the entire industrial complex rather than by individual companies.
