Shyam Metalics launches stainless steel rebar for coastal projects

Shyam Metalics and Energy has announced the launch of stainless steel rebars targeting coastal infrastructure projects. The initiative supports the Indian government’s “Make in India” program by encouraging high-quality, indigenously produced materials to meet the growing demands of the country’s infrastructure sector, especially in coastal areas.

The decision follows the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' circular advocating the use of corrosion-resistant stainless steel rebars in areas prone to saltwater and humidity. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized the importance of using rust-resistant materials for projects within 30 kilometers of the coast to increase the lifespan of vital infrastructure like bridges, roads, and ports.

Stainless steel rebars offer significant advantages over other types of steel. While mild steel rebars are initially more affordable, they are more susceptible to corrosion, especially in coastal environments, resulting in increased long-term maintenance costs. In contrast, stainless steel rebars offer up to ten times more corrosion resistance and have a lifespan of 80-100 years, compared to the lifespan of mild steel rebars of around 30 years.

By offering corrosion-resistant materials, Shyam Metalics is set to play a key role in advancing India’s coastal infrastructure projects. This move aligns with the government’s focus on sustainable and long-lasting construction solutions under the Make in India initiative.
