As part of the agreement, starting from January 2026, Oldendorff will transport iron ore from various loading ports to Hamburg using bulk carriers focused on fuel efficiency. By optimizing cargo flows and routes, the collaboration is expected to reduce CO₂e emissions by at least 20%. These measures will not result in additional costs for Salzgitter; on the contrary, the reduction in fuel consumption will generate cost savings.
The project aims to reduce approximately 19,000 tons of CO₂e emissions annually. This is equivalent to removing more than 4,000 cars from the roads. In this context, the reductions achieved are accounted for as Scope 1 emissions for Oldendorff and Scope 3 emissions for Salzgitter.
Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG, emphasized the importance of the collaboration:

In this context, logistics especially the sea transport of raw materials plays a central role. This German collaboration demonstrates that both companies are taking concrete steps to reduce emissions in their operations, in line with their decarbonization strategies.
Oldendorff’s fleet consists of modern “eco” bulk carriers that consume less fuel compared to previous-generation vessels. Advanced hull designs, modern engine technologies, and additional fuel-saving features contribute to reducing the carbon intensity per ton of cargo transported.
