Ilsenburger Grobblech, TM Group and ENERCON cooperate on carbon-free wind turbines

Wind turbine manufacturer ENERCON, Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, and SMB Schönebecker Maschinenbau GmbH of the TM Group have joined forces to produce the first low-emission steel tower in Germany. This innovative tower will be used at the Diepholzer Bruch wind farm in Lower Saxony in early 2025.

ENERCON authorities announced that the collaboration will reduce the carbon footprint of the steel towers by more than 70%, while the steel for the tower consists of carbon-reduced slabs produced from scrap in an electric arc furnace. This will be one of the first European land wind turbines and the first wind turbine in Germany to have a tower made of low-emission steel, often referred to as 'green steel'. Salzgitter AG aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 95% by 2033 by replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen.

Stefan Frey, Global Procurement Director for ENERCON Towers, stated that the cooperation is an important step in terms of increasing sustainability and added: “Working with strong partners from the steel industry is a major advance in achieving our environmentally responsible production goals. By combining our expertise, we are able to reduce the carbon footprint of this steel tower by over 70%. This will help us to offer our customers more sustainable tower options without compromising our quality standards.”

Thorsten Gintaut, General Manager Sales at Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, emphasized that “We work closely with our research and industrial partners to produce climate-friendly steel. With this project, we are delighted to produce the first low-emission tower for a wind turbine in Germany.”
