SAIL orders new hot blast stove from Primetals Technologies

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has placed an order with Primetals Technologies for a new hot blast stove for Blast Furnace No. 5 at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Rourkela, India. This is the fourth stove at the site and the second order SAIL has placed with Primetals, reaffirming the company’s position as a leading supplier of hot blast stove technologies.

Once commissioned, the new stove will allow RSP to carry out maintenance and repair work on existing stoves sequentially, while maintaining blast furnace production capacity.

Innovative Design for Efficiency and Durability

As part of a turnkey project, Primetals Technologies will design the new internal combustion chamber stove and will be responsible for engineering, equipment supply, construction, and full commissioning.

The project scope includes the stove shell, refractory materials, field instrumentation, electrical and automation systems, as well as an upgrade of the Level-1 automation system.

The improved dome design ensures better handling of high temperatures and thermal expansion, while Primetals’ proprietary burner design provides a more stable and reliable flame, enhancing operational safety.

Commissioning of the new stove is scheduled for mid-2026. The addition of this fourth unit is expected to improve flexibility and stability in RSP’s blast furnace operations.
