SAIL launches EUR 5 billion investment for IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur

Indian steel company Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has launched a EUR 5 billion (approximately INR 45,810 crore) investment in the expansion and modernization of the IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur in the state of West Bengal.

SAIL launches EUR 5 billion investment for IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur

The company announced that it has started the tender process for the project after receiving environmental clearance from the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on June 4. The investment includes the construction of a new plant with an annual capacity of 4.6 million tons. Once completed, the total installed capacity of the plant is expected to reach 7.1 million tons.

Unlike the existing production lines, the new plant will produce advanced steel grades used in sectors such as automotive and consumer durables. The project is planned to be completed by 2029.

It was stated that approximately 1,165 hectares (approximately 2,880 acres) of land is ready for the project, which is being carried out by the Indian Steel Ministry, to which SAIL is affiliated. The project is strategically important to support economic revival in West Bengal in general and the Asansol-Durgapur industrial belt in particular.
