SAIL Bokaro signed a tech transfer deal with DRDO for naval defence steel

The Bokaro Steel Plant of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has signed a Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the production of special-grade defence steel.

SAIL Bokaro signed a tech transfer deal with DRDO for naval defence steel

With this agreement, the Bokaro Steel Plant will be able to produce DMR 249A steel specifically for naval and defence applications. The steel produced can be supplied to the Indian Armed Forces and relevant government agencies.

The agreement was officially handed over to representatives of the Bokaro Steel Plant (B. Sunita Minz, S.S. Panigrahy, and Rahul Tiwari) by DMRL Director Dr. R. Balamuralikrishnan during a ceremony held in Hyderabad.

Priya Ranjan, Executive Director (Works) of the Bokaro Steel Plant, described this development as an important step toward meeting India’s defence sector requirements, stating that the plant will continue to support defence production by manufacturing special-grade steels.

SAIL and DMRL have been collaborating for nearly two decades to develop advanced metals and materials required for modern warfare. DMR 249A steel, developed especially for naval applications, has been produced in quantities exceeding 46,500 tons since 2007 and has played a critical role in the construction of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, as well as frigates such as INS Nilgiri, INS Mahendragiri, and INS Vindhyagiri.
