SAIL and JCIL to invest USD 692 million for electrical steel production

India's leading steel producer Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and John Cockerill India will build a new plant to produce cold-rolled electrical steel. The plant, which will be built with an investment of USD 692 million, will have a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year and is planned to be operational in 2027-2029, according to a statement released on 14 January. The raw material for the plant will be hot rolled coil (HRC) to be supplied by SAIL.

This project is seen as a step towards collaborating on green steel technologies and innovations under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between SAIL and John Cockerill India in November 2022. In addition, SAIL plans to set up an electric arc furnace for green steel production. The Indian government defines green steel with CO2 emissions of 2.2 metric tons or less per metric ton.

SAIL will collaborate with Australian mining company BHP in another strategy to decarbonise steel production. The two companies will explore the use of alternative reductants (hydrogen, biogas) in blast furnace steel plants in India to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This co-operation will strengthen BHP's support for low-carbon steelmaking technologies in India and will be an important step for the development of the Indian steel industry.
