Russian Railways: 3.9 million tons of ferrous metals were sent for export to sea terminals

According to data from Russian Railways (RZD), ferrous metals accounted for 5% of total export freight volumes in the period from January to March 2025.

“In total, 79.5 million tons of export cargo were shipped to seaports via the RZD network in the first quarter — 1% more than in the same period of 2024. This included 31.3 million tons of various cargo shipped to the North-West (-0.4%), 29.3 million tons to Far Eastern ports (+4.2%), and 18.9 million tons to southern ports (-1.4%). Positive growth was recorded for coal (40.6 million tons, +2.6%), ferrous metals (3.9 million tons, +5.5%), fertilizers (up 1.4 times to 9.1 million tons), iron ore (1.4 million tons, +4.7%), and timber cargo (up 25.6% to 74.7 thousand tons). ...In the overall structure of export freight, coal made up 51.1%, oil cargo 20.6%, fertilizers 11.5%, ferrous metals 5%, grain 2.9%, and ore 1.7%,” RZD reported.

Specifically, shipments of ferrous metals to the North-Western ports increased by 5.3% to 955.9 thousand tons. Shipments to seaports in the Far East totaled 586.8 thousand tons, up 5.9% year-over-year. Through southern ports, 2.4 million tons of ferrous metals were exported (+5.6%).
