Rio Tinto expects first-quarter iron ore shipments disrupted by Tropical Storm Sean

Rio Tinto announced that iron ore shipments for the first quarter of 2025 will be impacted due to record rainfall caused by Tropical Storm Sean in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. On January 20, 274 mm of rainfall was recorded in the region, damaging an iron loading vehicle at the East Intercourse Island (EII) port. The company said this vehicle will be out of operation for 3-4 weeks after repairs are completed. In 2024, the EII port handled Rio Tinto's total shipment of 45 million tons of iron ore.

Rio Tinto recognized that the outages would impact first quarter shipments, but kept its overall 2025 shipment guidance unchanged and maintained its total shipment target of 323 million to 338 million tons. The company said it will continue to transport iron ore using other iron loading vehicles and that operational recovery efforts are continuing apace. Operations at other major producers, such as BHP and Fortescue, were reported to be rapidly returning to normal.
