Metinvest, Ukraine's largest steelmaker, said on Saturday that it will not operate under Russian occupation, saying that more than a third of Ukraine's steel production capacity has been shut down due to the attack on the southeastern port city of Mariupol.
Ukraine's iron ore production has fallen by more than half since Russia invaded the country on February 24. This move showed the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian war on the steel industry. But Russia is also preparing a new offensive in eastern Ukraine, where most of Ukraine's steel and coal production is concentrated.
Metinvest owns the Ilyich and Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol. The company said factories were damaged and it is not currently possible to take an inventory of the damage and assess the extent of the damage.
