According to performance data shared by Primetals Technologies and Hubei Shunle, these EAF Quantum furnaces set a world record for electrical steel production, achieving 50 castings per day. Both furnaces regularly achieved a “tap-to-tap” time of less than 28 minutes, while the power-on time in the range of 48 to 50 castings was approximately 25 minutes and the power-off time was only 3 minutes.
The furnaces' energy consumption data is also remarkable: they operate with energy use of less than 312 kilowatt hours per ton of steel production and oxygen consumption of less than 24 cubic meters per ton. These figures prove that the plant produces with high efficiency.
Technological Innovations Increase Efficiency
EAF Quantum furnaces stand out in the industry thanks to their innovative technologies. The scrap preheating system, which utilizes waste gases from the production process, significantly reduces energy consumption during the melting phase. This system also speeds up the production process by shortening the power-up time.
Another important feature is the FAST (Furnace Advanced Slag-free Tapping) system, which makes it possible to transfer liquid steel into the ladle and fill the ladle hole while the power is on. This minimizes tap-to-tap times. EAF Quantum's unique shaft design and automatic ladle hole sand filling system are protected by patents owned by Primetals Technologies.
15 Active EAF Quantum Plants Worldwide
Worldwide, 15 EAF Quantum plants have been commissioned to date and new installations are underway. Hubei Shunle's order was placed in 2018 and included two EAF Quantum furnaces, two twin ladle furnaces, mechanical and electrical systems, level 1 and 2 automation solutions, automated scrap yard management, automatic charging systems, oxygen injection and sand filling systems.
Green Steel and Smart Production Vision
Hubei Shunle produces 2 million tons of high-strength seismic ribbed steel per year and offers a wide range of products including steel wire, pipe, carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. The company aims to take its cooperation with Primetals Technologies even further.
