Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel commissioned the No. 5 ultra-thick slab caster with two strands, supplied by Primetals Technologies, at its Zhanjiang facility in Guangdong province, as of January 9, 2026.
The new slab caster is designed to produce ultra-thick slabs with widths of up to 2,700 millimeters and thicknesses of up to 460 millimeters. Thanks to Single Roll DynaGap (SRD) segments with a load capacity of 5,000 kilonewtons per roll, significant thickness reduction is achieved during the casting process. This technology enables the reliable production of flawless ultra-thick products by ensuring slabs with high internal quality.
With an annual capacity of 3.5 million tons, the No. 5 slab caster will produce steel for applications such as offshore projects, wind energy equipment, and shipbuilding. Compared to traditional ingot or vertical casting methods, the new curved continuous casting design offers higher cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
As part of the project, Primetals Technologies provided engineering services, supply of key mechanical and electrical equipment, Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, and advanced digital solutions. A standout software solution determines the ideal roll geometry to prevent mold level fluctuations at the design stage. This reduces fluctuations caused by unstable bulging by 50%, enabling higher casting speeds and increased efficiency. The software optimizes roll arrangement by taking into account parameters such as steel grade, cross-sectional dimensions, and casting speed.
Under the long-term collaboration between the two companies, Primetals Technologies had previously supplied slab casters No. 1, 2, 3, and 6 at the Zhanjiang facility. These lines have reportedly been operating stably and efficiently since their commissioning.
Operating under China Baowu Steel Group Corporation, Baosteel conducts production at its integrated iron and steel facilities in Shanghai, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Zhanjiang.
