POSCO Chairman Jang In-hwa called for global cooperation on decarbonization at the Worldsteel meeting

According to a statement released by POSCO Holdings on March 15, Jang In-hwa attended the meeting held on March 13, representing the South Korean steel industry. The meeting was also attended by senior executives from global steel producers such as Baowu Steel, Nippon Steel, and India’s JSW Steel.

The discussions covered medium- and long-term issues including the energy crisis, the impact of geopolitical risks on industry, and the international standardization of carbon emissions measurement methods. Representatives of the global steel industry evaluated the importance of collective action in the face of current structural challenges.

Chairman Jang In-hwa emphasized that, despite slowing demand and rising energy costs, the transition to decarbonization should remain a shared goal for the industry. Sharing POSCO’s roadmap in this area, Jang stated that low-carbon steel production should be further supported.

He also said, “A strong cooperation and solidarity is essential for the global steel industry to successfully achieve a decarbonization transition and for carbon-reducing steel to receive the value it deserves.”

Following the meeting, Jang In-hwa held separate discussions with Sajjan Jindal (JSW Group) and Liu Jian from China. The meetings addressed topics such as overseas steel investments, carbon reduction technologies, and supply chain stability.

At the member companies’ session held after the meeting, POSCO was awarded the “Sustainability Champion” plaque. This award, presented by the World Steel Association, is given to companies contributing to sustainable development in the steel industry. POSCO receiving this title for five consecutive years since 2022 once again highlights the company’s global ESG performance.

The World Steel Association operates as an international organization aiming to strengthen global cooperation in the steel industry, bringing together 157 member companies, regional associations, and research institutions worldwide.
