In Poland, steel consumption decreased by 11% to 11.8 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022.

According to data released by the Polish Association of Steel Distributors (PUDS), steel consumption in Poland decreased by 11% to 11.8 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022.

Sources said that in addition to steel consumption, steel production in Poland dropped by 13% compared to last year and amounted to 6.5 million tons, while the figures for Polish steel production and consumption approximate the decline in steel consumption in the EU (10%) and Germany (13.7%).

The largest decreases in consumption among steel products were recorded for rebar and wire rod, with rebar down 24% compared to a year earlier and wire rod down 34% compared to a year earlier. The rebar market, which dropped by another EUR 3 during the week of April 15, was currently trading at EUR 625, according to SteelRadar data. Wire rod prices, which were last down by EUR 3 in early April, have been stable at EUR 668 for a long time, the data showed. Sources anticipate that the long product market will also rise positively in the short term with the increasing number of housing units.

According to the Polish Steel Industry Association, steel consumption is forecast to increase by 10% to 13 million tons in 2024 and by 11% to 14.4 million tons in 2025.
