Based in Bakewell, Derbyshire, Jackie Neal founded stainless steel producer Abbey Forged Products in the 1970s, starting out from the dining table in her home. Today, the company employs more than 200 people and is regarded as one of Europe’s leading suppliers of forged metal and stainless steel products.
Neal, 75, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her contributions to British industry and engineering. Abbey Forged Products supplies high-specification steel for critical UK security and defence projects, including nuclear, aerospace and submarine programmes.
The company has now been operating for more than four decades, and Neal remains actively involved in its day-to-day management. She continues to travel daily to the firm’s Sheffield office, maintaining a hands-on role in the business.
Reflecting on gender representation in the sector, Neal said she is encouraged by the growing number of women entering the steel industry in recent years. However, she noted that the company has yet to employ a female forge worker, citing the significant physical strength required for the role.
