Steel Minister Sandeep Poundrik stated on Wednesday that this level marks an important milestone for the country.
Speaking at a workshop organized by the Ministry of Steel in the capital, Poundrik highlighted that India has achieved over a 12% increase in steel production compared to global declines. The Minister stated, “Our per capita steel consumption is now over 100 kilograms. This is a significant milestone in line with the government’s long-term objectives.”
India’s National Steel Policy, which came into effect in 2017, aims to raise per capita final steel consumption to approximately 160 kilograms by 2030-31. At the start of the policy, per capita steel consumption was around 60 kilograms. The policy also includes targets of 300 million tons of crude steel capacity and 255 million tons of production by 2030-31.
