Outokumpu strengthens 'Green Steel' operations

A global leading stainless steel producer, Outokumpu is preparing to take a critical step towards its main goal of reducing direct emissions through environmentally friendly innovations. A pellet facility in Tornio, Finland, will produce biocoal extracted from biomass fuel.

Timo Huhtala, general manager of Outokumpu, is expected to say that the production of biocoal to replace fossil coke, which currently represents more than half of the company's direct emissions, is an imperative move that will greatly reduce negative factors for the environment. Huhtala also believes that this new facility can be a key enabler towards achieving the 2030 climate target compared to the 2016 baseline, with Outokumpu's emissions expected to be reduced by 42% across the entire value chain upon completion of the facility.

With a total investment of around EUR 30 million, the project is expected to start production in the middle of 2025. The carbon footprint of Outokumpu's ferrochrome is 67% lower than the industry average and is considered to serve as a model not only for its sector, but for the industry as a whole.

Outokumpu's 'green steel' initiative is expected to not only support the company's renewable efforts, but also set a new industry standard and lead the way for the expansion of environmentally friendly production.
