Nucor said the investment will add a galvanizing line to increase production of corrosion-resistant products. The company added that the galvanizing line will have an annual capacity of about 500,000 tons and the ability to make galvanized steel up to 72 inches wide. The expansion is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
The expansion comes after Nucor announced in August that it would invest $200 million in the Berkeley plant, including the construction of an air separation unit to supply industrial gas to the plant's steelmaking operations. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster praised the company's numerous investments in the state.
"We look forward to many more years of our strong partnership," McMaster said.
The most recent expansion received business development loans and a $400,000 Leave grant from the South Carolina Economic Development Coordinating Council. Nucor serves the automotive, energy and agricultural sectors with products such as hollow structural pipes, carbon and alloy steels, precision castings and electric pipes.
