Nippon Steel filed a lawsuit in January against U.S. steel producer Cleveland-Cliffs, its CEO Lourenco Goncalves, and United Steelworkers (USW) President David McCall. The company claimed that these parties had engaged in unlawful actions to obstruct the acquisition process. The case had been closely monitored due to its implications for the industry’s future and the rights of steelworkers in the U.S.
In a joint statement, both companies emphasized that Nippon Steel and US Steel will now focus on steel production and collective bargaining agreements. “Our priority will be the sustainable growth of the industry and the protection of workers’ shared interests,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, USW also withdrew its complaint filed with an independent administrative body in the U.S. against US Steel, which had alleged that the company pressured employees not to oppose the acquisition plan. This step effectively ends the tension between the union and the company.
During Nippon Steel’s acquisition of US Steel, political circles and labor unions in the U.S. had occasionally voiced critical opinions. However, recent developments indicate that all disputes related to the acquisition have been resolved, and the parties are set to focus on production, maintaining competitiveness, and ensuring continued employment.
