Mexico to request exemption from Washington for double steel tariffs

Mexico will officially request the U.S. administration to exempt it from the decision to increase customs duties on steel imports to 50%.

Mexico to request exemption from Washington for double steel tariffs

Mexico’s Minister of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, stated at an event in Mexico City on June 3rd, “This decision is unfair and unsustainable. On Friday, we will present our reasons to the U.S. administration to exclude Mexico from this measure.”

Ebrard also noted that he would hold talks with U.S. officials in Washington on June 6th and mentioned that a “Plan B” is ready to be implemented if the tariff continues.

On June 3rd, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order raising tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%. The move was announced as a measure to protect domestic producers and ensure national security.

Ebrard emphasized that the new decisions will have negative impacts on sectors such as automotive, construction, and electronics. Mexico, as a key supplier in these sectors, warns that the increased tariffs will cause serious economic damage.
