Speaking on behalf of Kocaer Çelik, the Gold Sponsor and Lunch Sponsor of the conference, Çakmur stated that they have 3 factories and have reached an annual production capacity of 800 thousand tons. Stating that they aim to complete this year with 600 thousand tons of production, Çakmur noted, "We work as a solution partner with most of our customers. We export to 6 continents and have been the export champion in the Aegean Region for 7 years."
“We want a lush green steel mill”
Speaking about their 2030 vision, Mehmet Çakmur stated, "We provide 33% of the energy we use from solar energy and we are working to improve this even further. Kocaer has always been one step ahead. We aim to establish the 4th profile rolling mill and in this profile rolling mill we aim to produce products that will substitute imports with value-added products. We are planning a steel mill of approximately 1 million tons to provide the raw material for this. We are currently doing preliminary work. We are working with a very good technical team and conducting technology research. When we choose the technologies we will use, we try to choose technologies that are suitable for the era. We are working to establish the best steel mill in terms of energy, emissions and carbon footprint, everything. We want it to be a lush green steel mill.
We aim to generate all of our own energy from sustainable sources by 2030. That's why we have a geothermal investment. By the end of 2026, we will switch to producing all of our current energy from renewable energy thanks to this geothermal and we will be able to produce all of our energy in 2030. We will build a 120 mega watt solar power plant."
Underlining that Kocaer is a company integrated with exports, Çakmur continued: "We have 2 distribution channels, Kocaer UK and Kocaer Ireland, and we aim to increase these distribution channels to 5 by 2030. Although we have been interrupted by the recent decisions taken by Europe, we continue to move forward with these goals in new markets with new targets. Soon, maybe we can meet in Syria,"
“We now need to turn to value-added products”
Mehmet Çakmur stated that their aim is to move towards high value-added products and added: "Türkiye is no longer a country that can produce cheap products. Our costs and labor are high. We now need to move towards value-added products. We always have sustainability and decarbonization targets. We are doing this for ourselves, for a better future. We are constantly working on this issue. We carry out this work in all branches, both in terms of emissions, the use of water resources and social equality, and we are conducting more detailed studies every day for this work."
China also boosts indirect steel exports
Mehmet Çakmur stated, "We always look at steel, but there is another issue we need to talk about, indirect steel. When we say indirect steel, we are talking about products made of steel. China is not only increasing its steel exports but also indirect steel exports. WorldSteel indirect steel exports, whether white goods or automotive, were 40 million tons in 2009, but by 2019 they were close to 100 million tons. Not only steel and billets come to us from China or the Far East. We also receive automobiles, machine parts and white goods. When we look at our own business and make calculations, we need to look at how much indirect steel we import and export."
“We need to work very closely with the state”
Stating that green steel will rise in the world, Çakmur continued: "There is no way the world can survive with these emissions. Even if we complain today, tomorrow we will have to enter into this green steel trend. Of course, there is a problem in Türkiye. Now you look at Europe, they are doing this with 3-4-5 billion subsidies. We still cannot see this in Türkiy. Therefore, we need to work very closely with the state. Green steel will be our future."
