Mechel launches new wire drawing equipment

Mechel PAO, a leading Russian mining and metals company, has announced the launch of eight draw benches used to produce wire at the Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant.

Mechel launches new wire drawing equipment

Equipment worth 500 million rubles was purchased as part of the plant's upgrade program for the cable and cable plant. The facility installed a total of 12 new high-performance machines. 1.5 billion rubles were invested in the project.

The launch ceremony was attended by Prime Minister of the Republic of Bashkortostan Andrei Nazarov, Chief Executive of Mechel Pao Oleg Korzhov and other high-ranking officials.

Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant started to implement the modernization investment project of the wire and cable plant in 2016. The project should be completed by the end of 2023. It includes a comprehensive technical renovation of the wire drawing facilities of the Prohe plant, the installation of new drawing benches and ancillary equipment, the reconfiguration of closed-loop recirculation systems, and the installation of a new waste treatment plant at the wire and cable facilities.

The new benches are equipped with belt knot scale crushers, rinsing tanks and coating machines. This allows the plant to mechanically scale the slag and abandon the application of chemical scaling for wire rods, improving its performance due to higher draw rates. New straight line machines can also eliminate kinks, which improves the mechanical properties of the wire.

The new benches will produce wire for prestressed wires and normal wire, as well as spring and welding wire. The capacity of all 12 benches will be over 125,000 tons per year.

Simultaneously with the assembly of the drawing tables, the plant built a new closed-loop recirculation system and installed the dust extraction systems.

“This upgrade will take Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant to a new level of production, increase our ecological impact, enable us to produce high-demand products and create high-performance jobs,” said Sergey Fedorov, General Manager of Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant.
