Steel production at Liberty's electric arc furnace in Rotherham will be reduced and imported from abroad instead. The firm announced that two of Liberty's sub-production units, including a rolling mill in Newport, will be idle.
As many as 440 positions may be affected by the plans, but Liberty will seek to protect them through its permitting and relocation program. The company stated that high energy costs and cheaper imports from abroad make the production of commodity grade products uncompetitive.
