GFG Alliance said that the use of imported slabs had become necessary to restart operations at the facility, noting that Dalzell had initially planned to source its slab requirements from British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant. However, disruptions at British Steel prompted the company to turn to imported material to resume production.
Dalzell had faced production disruptions since August 2024
With an annual production capacity of approximately 300,000 tons, the Dalzell plant halted operations in August 2024 due to weak market conditions.
In February 2026, GFG Alliance announced that financing had been secured for Dalzell and that it was working to purchase slabs from British Steel in order to restart production. However, after problems at British Steel disrupted supply, the company began importing slabs from Kazakhstan.
The company expects slab supplies from British Steel to resume later in the year.
The plant had been selected to supply rolled steel for Navantia UK’s Fleet Solid Support vessel production program. Liberty Steel reportedly secured an order for approximately 34,000 tons of rolled steel for the three vessels, while issues with slab supply caused delays to the production process.
