Kocaer Steel became the only Turkish company in the industry whose science-based targets have been approved

Kocaer Steel became the only Turkish company in the industry whose Near-Term (2030) and Net Zero (2050) emission reduction targets have been approved and remain valid by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Kocaer Steel became the only Turkish company in the industry whose science-based targets have been approved

SBTi is a global initiative established in collaboration with CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encouraging companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with climate science. Operating in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C, the initiative independently evaluates and approves companies’ emission reduction plans based on scientific criteria.

“Shaping the Future of Steel with Science”

Kocaer Steel is transforming its vision of low-carbon steel production into reality through steady steps by strengthening its sustainability strategy with concrete targets. These targets, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), reaffirm the company’s commitment to combating climate change according to international scientific standards.

Hakan Kocaer, Chairman of Kocaer Steel, commented on the process:

“As part of our efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, our company has committed its science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our operations to SBTi. Following the completion of the validation process, both our Near-Term (2030) and Net Zero (2050) emission reduction commitments have been approved and certified. This approval once again confirms the international validity of our climate science-aligned roadmap.”

Towards Sustainable Production with Science-Based Targets

Based on the 2022 baseline, Kocaer Steel has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42%, and Scope 3 emissions per ton of steel produced by 51.6%. In the long term, by 2050, the company aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and Scope 3 emissions per ton of steel by 97%.

These targets demonstrate that Kocaer Steel’s production activities are fully aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C global warming limit and showcase the company’s science-based approach to steel production.

Hakan Kocaer added on the approved targets:

“The approval of both our 2030 and 2050 emission reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has once again proven that our sustainability strategy is not just a vision but a verified roadmap grounded in science. Our responsibility in combating climate change is integrated at the core of all our processes, including production, supply chain, and energy management.

At Kocaer Steel, we are shaping the future of steel with science; we are steadfastly pursuing our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, improve resource efficiency, and leave a more sustainable world for future generations.”
