Japan’s largest nuclear facility awaits approval to restart operations

Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates Japan’s largest nuclear power plant, is expected to receive the necessary approval from local authorities today to resume operations.

Japan’s largest nuclear facility awaits approval to restart operations

Documents related to the process indicate that the governor, who is expected to hold a press conference later today, will present the national government with a series of demands to ensure the plant is operated in accordance with updated safety standards.

The decision to be issued by the governorship is seen as the last major step that needs to be overcome before the facility can be put back into operation.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the country’s eastern coast in 2011, followed by a tsunami that swept across Honshu, caused severe damage at the Fukushima nuclear plant and triggered sweeping changes in Japan’s energy policies.

The reopening of the plant is seen as a critical milestone for Japan, which shut down all 54 of its operating reactors in the aftermath of the disaster and became increasingly reliant on fossil fuel imports, leaving its energy supply more vulnerable.
